Tech giants harness the power of the creator economy

Both YouTube and TikTok hit all-time highs for in-app revenue in the month of May. Maybe those deceptive in-app pop-ups from YouTube are working. You know the ones - they ask you to start a free trial or to "skip" the free trial. That or people have been splurging on superchats for their favorite content creators. TikTok sells coins but they are similar to YouTube's superchats in that users buy them in order to tip creators. Last month, TikTok hit $63M. Its previous high was $58.2M in April 2021. YouTube hit $47.5M. Its previous high was $44.3M in March 2021.

Demand driven

Even with DAUs at all-time highs for many top rental car apps, it might not be the hot rental summer these companies hoped for. The increased demand stems from a combination of pent-up travel plans and the desire to be in less-crowded spaces (less public transit). But rental car companies sold off significant portions of their inventory to stay afloat when travel shut down last year. Buying back that inventory is a longer process. We recently partnered with Braze and Skyscanner for an in-depth travel report that will debut next week. I'll share the link with you in next Friday's newsletter.

Why your brand needs a mobile game

Brainstorming ways to drive customer interaction? Trying to grow your loyalty program into something truly special, and that actually builds loyalty? You should launch a well-thought-out mobile game and get more real estate on your customers’ most personal device -- the one they look at 80 times per day.

HBO Max outpaces top competitors Disney+ and Netflix for mobile app downloads in its first year

In its first year live, the HBO Max mobile app has been installed 43M times, which is 664% more than it had been installed (5.5M) the year before when it was the HBO NOW app. The 43 million installs is more than any other major streaming subscription video app had in the US during this same time period.
