Mobile Signal
MoneyGram (MGI) is scheduled to report earnings on 7/28. User sessions of its mobile apps are up 7.5% YoY and are flat QoQ.
App Acquisitions
Automattic has acquired Pocket Casts, an app to discover and play podcasts. The app has more than 500k monthly active users.
Byju's has acquired Epic, an educational reading platform, for $500M. The app has generated $13.6 million via IAP revenue over the past 365 days.
Google's YouTube has acquired Simsim, a shopping app with social features. The app has been downloaded more than 8 million times since launch in June 2019.
MUSINGS
Gotta acquire em all
Not only was the this year's fest the largest as judged by user acquisition, but it was also the largest by in-app purchase revenue generated. The fest also created the game's largest single day of downloads since February 26, 2017, with 500k. Pokémon Go fest is a live and in-game event packed full of special features, events and pokémon. Players at the actual event venues receive even more bonuses.
Why so serious?
Because 250k downloads in three months is no laughing matter, especially when the delivery market has plenty of well-backed competitors. Jokr, a consumer delivery platform, launched mid-April of this year and received $170M in funding earlier this week. What makes Jokr different from something like Postmates or Instacart? From an organizational standpoint, most of its deliverers are employees, not contractors. From a marketing standpoint, it's focused on supporting local suppliers and stores, as well as preventing food waste. The app has received 55% of its downloads to date from Mexico + Colombia. The US represents 15% of its downloads.
