Hey there,

Happy Friday 😎

Listen to or watch the latest episode of Somewhat Mobile with Harold Teo, Producer of Garena's Free Fire. Free Fire is one of the most downloaded games globally over the past three years. In addition to some good local food talk at the end, Teo explains how his team makes the game so accessible to a geographically diverse player base, and the level of community engagement that goes on behind the scenes.

Peloton needs to get into shape

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall request to Peloton for its treadmill due to risk of injury. The company initially refused the recall but has now complied. Not only has this put a big dent in its stream of new daily installs for the mobile app (a drop of ~50%), but DAUs have also fallen 11.6% since the recall request was issued. Just like when Chipotle had a Norovirus issue, I don't anticipate this hurting the app's performance indefinitely.

Spreading its feathers

It's true, peacocks can fly. Peacock has increased its revenue generated from in-app purchases every month since launch, even though the service has a free version and a seven day free trial for its two paid ($4.99 / $9.99 per month) paid tiers. So far, Peacock's IAP revenue is still below that of popular streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, but those services do not also generate revenue from advertising like Peacock does. If Peacock continues its current revenue generating trend, it could surpass the monthly IAP revenue of Amazon Prime Video in the US by the end of June.
