Business
Mobile Signal

App Acquisitions
Byju's has acquired Great Learning, an edtech startup, for $600 million. Its mobile app has more than 340 million MAUs in India.
ThredUp has acquired Remix, a clothing marketplace similar to ThredUp, for $28 million. The European app has been downloaded 1.1 million times since launch in July 2016.
MUSINGS
Going for gold green
The vault of NBC's mobile app metrics looks good but will it stick the landing and retain these users? All three major NBC apps saw noticeable boosts to their download numbers as the Olympics got underway. Looking at historical data for Peacock, it's had the best showing so far, hitting 211k downloads on July 27th. This is the most it has had on any single day since launch. NBC Sports had the largest percentage gain, having its average daily downloads increase 706%. However, the app saw 120k more downloads over the first week of the 2018 Winter Olympics. To be fair, Peacock was unavailable for download at that point in time. The NBC App saw an uptick as well but it did not measure up well to historical spikes for the app from other events, including the Golden Globes.
But do you like cats?
Dating is a lot of work and not every app has an amazing, Excel-like filter where you can sort by the most important interests you would want a partner to have. Enter apps like Veggly (vegans), Kippo (gamers), Tabby (cat lovers), Hiki (individuals with autism) and many more. Over the past two years, new users and revenue have been slowly, but pretty consistently, increasing for apps where a user's top interest is a given. It enables people to cut through the noise and have more productive conversations. A deeper dive on this emerging trend in dating will be coming to the Apptopia blog within the next two weeks.

If you have an idea for an app, you may be eager to go to production and get it in front of users as soon as you can. While that strategy works for some, it’s unlikely to yield the results you were hoping for.
To learn more about launching and marketing an app, we spoke with Till Financial Co-founder, Taylor Burton, to get his first-hand experience. Taylor shares Till's approach to revenue generation, marketing, benchmarking, and his dislike for a certain type of pizza.
