Hey Adam,
Happy Friday 😎
If you missed last week’s action-packed newsletter, you cancheck it out here.
Yes, the mobile podcast you forgot about is back! And unlike McDonald's Szechuan sauce, it's not for a limited time... that we plan on, stuff happens.
This week I'm sitting down with Makoto Rheault-Kihara, Head of UA at Hopper. Makoto shares why social is such a strong acquisition channel for the company compared with its competitors. We also talk about the impact Apple's ATT policies have had on his efforts, and how he's viewing the opportunity of more ad placements within the App Store. Does learning from the best bore you? Then fast forward to 24:00 to see if I can stump Makoto in a game of Two Apps and a Lie. And Edris Elba, if you're reading this, be expecting a call...

The impetus for gathering this data was a CNBC article which argued the Facebook Login button is "disappearing" due to privacy concerns. In viewing this data, we don't see a recent trend but we did notice a break in the trend between installs and uninstalls of the Facebook Login SDK in January 2021. Before this, they moved together and now they are still somewhat moving together, but the ratio has broken. I looked into a number of privacy changes and even the timing of Sign in with Apple, but none of these items seemed to line up with this chart. I need to mention, even with installs falling, the number of apps with the Facebook Login SDK installed continues to grow steadily each month. If you have any ideas, feel free to tweet me @adamblacker25.
BeReal was ranked either #1 or #2 Overall in the iOS App Store for 64 consecutive days. It was the most installed non-gaming iOS app in the month of August, just ahead of Instagram. However, the launch of iOS 16 brought lock screen customization and it is what the people want. BeReal was moved to the #3 spot, making room for Amazon Prime Video and Top Widgets. Prime Video snuck in there because of an exclusive deal to stream Thursday Night Football. You can see the 650% increase in daily downloads from the top 5 iOS widget apps in the chart above.
The average price of an in-app purchase (IAP) in the U.S. on the iOS App Store has increased 40% year-over-year (YoY) in the month of July. That number is 9% on the Google Play store.
This Q2 earnings review breaks down what we saw in Uber (UBER) and Duolingo (DUOL) that Wall Street did not, and a consideration for evaluating Six Flags Entertainment (SIX).
