This week at Apptopia
Hey there,
Happy Friday 😎
If you missed last week's action packed newsletter, you can check it out here.
Too Good To Go's Head of Marketing, Claire Oliverson, joins us to share how the business balances its mission with generating revenue, and what other cause-driven app marketers can do to reach potential users.
Business
Mobile Signal
Twitter (TWTR) is scheduled to report earnings on 7/22. User sessions of the app are up 13.6% YoY and are down 2.1% QoQ.
App Acquisitions
Amazon has acquired Wickr, a secure messaging app. More than two million people open the app every month.
Etsy has acquired Elo7, another crafts marketplace company, for $217M. The mobile app has been downloaded 7.8M times since launch in December 2014.
MUSINGS
A dominant Duo
The language learning app filed to go public earlier this week under ticker DUOL. You can read the S1 here. In two years, the mobile app has grown its IAP revenue market share from 32% to 57%, and it currently holds a 64% share of daily active users for top language learning apps. The product itself puts a lot of effort into gamification and engagement, but does this help people actually learn a new language? Does it matter if they're having fun?

That's the address of my favorite sushi place. What3words is a navigation app that has mapped every 10 square foot piece of land on earth and given each a unique three word name. The app launched in 2013 but has recently taken off thanks to partnerships and funding from Ikea's investment division. Recent partnerships include police departments in the US and scooter rental company, Lime. Police departments ask citizens to download the app so if they call emergency services, they can provide their precise what3words location to them, rather than pinging cell towers or relying on verbal descriptions. Lime is using the mapping to better locate bikes that people report as incorrectly parked.
