messenger market share@2x

Down but not out

Meta owns both Messenger and WhatsApp. While WhatsApp has gained share at the same time Messenger is losing share, combined, the two have ceded 21.7 points to the combination of Telegram and Signal over the past two years. Messenger itself has gone from a 50.6% share in Q1 2020 to a 26.9% share in Q4 2022. Telegram has moved from 7% to 26.3% over the same time period. Still, the combination of Messenger and WhatsApp is responsible for 67.7% of the market shown above.

NFL user sessions meh@2x (1)

Achilles heel
The NFL team apps are used for fan content (pictures, podcasts, live radio call of the game, news articles), team information, stats, and in-stadium tools. I'm a fantasy football junkie so I pay attention to lots involving the NFL. The league that is a non-profit has been a marketing and money making machine for a long time. So it struck me as odd to see its mobile game being meh. For this chart, I'm only using data from Q3 and Q4 of every year because those are the quarters of high usage. They are also the main quarters of the NFL season. I guess even the mighty have weaknesses. The NFL does not miss an opportunity to create engagement though and so I expect most of its 32 teams will be investing more into their mobile offerings this offseason after reviewing this chart.
